Weather-Beating Jacket that’s Sure to Get You Noticed!

Vision Vene jacket £249 at www.guideflyfishing.co.uk

While some anglers prefer to blend in with their surroundings there are others who like to make a statement – and you can certainly do that with this Vene jacket.

The bright red tartan design means you won’t go unnoticed – but if you think the fish will be put off don’t be: I’ve worn this jacket all season from the boat and bank and have had plenty of fish to the net. The jacket is made from Vision’s waterproof and breathable F4 extra durable fabric and all seams have been taped.

The first time you wear it you can tell it has been designed for harsh conditions: it’s a good deal heavier than any other Vision waterproof I’ve reviewed, but that’s not to say it’s uncomfortable. It has a reasonably roomy fit with a scalloped lower back.

The articulated sleeves are tailored to give a good fit, culminating in a shaped cuff which sits over the back of your hand. Inner storm cuffs with Velcro fasteners give a nice seal around the wrist.

Like many modern ‘technical’ jackets this one does not have a separate lining, it is just one laminated fabric so it slides smoothly over your undergarments. The YKK Aquaguard Vislon main zipper has a storm flap and rain gutter behind it and the zip tab tucks away into a soft brushed fleece chin guard to prevent chafing.

“The heavier fabric, while providing extra warmth, did feel stiff to start with but after a few outings it softened up nicely.”

All-weather protection

The built-in hood has a good peak and adjusters on the back of the head and around the front of the face. This exceptionally good fit combines with a high brushed fleece collar to offer great protection from the elements.

Pockets have been kept to a minimum: there are two flat zipped chest pockets with YKK water resistant zips, and two large side pockets, again with water resistant zips and storm flaps. These side pockets are lined with a soft brushed fleece so double up as handwarmers.

Inside there are two zipped flat pockets with small hemmed slots so you can thread through a set of music or phone leads. Also inside are mesh pockets with elasticated open tops.

Extra features include small D-rings on the inside of the side pockets; one larger D-ring on the back of the neck; glasses cleaning cloth attached to one of the chest pockets; double toggle lock and elasticated cord adjuster around the bottom hem and the cords are retained inside the jacket.

The graphics on the jacket are in a fluorescent print so will glow under a light. Available in sizes M to XXL, and on special order in S and XXXL.

VERDICT

This jacket has been made to beat harsh weather and it’s certainly done that this season. One of the areas that can take the brunt of wet weather is across the shoulders and these seams have been relocated to either side of the arms to give extra resilience.
